Year 1

Class teacher Miss McCarthy

Year 1 is a very exciting year where the children transition from Early Years and move onto the National Curriculum. Early reading and phonics are a key priority in Year 1. We build on from Reception Class and continue with the Letters and Sounds scheme. We continue to send home reading books which directly link to the children’s phonics.

Books are broken down into the different phonic phases using a variety of books such as Oxford Reading Tree and Songbirds. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure and have free choice reading from our Library Books over the weekend. We encourage the children’s cursive style of writing and they gradually move towards a fully joined script. They use concrete apparatus to support their maths and develop further their problem-solving skills.

Children are encouraged to be creative, independent and resilient, as they experience an exciting, broad and balanced curriculum which includes ‘The Power of Reading’. At the end of Year 1 the children undertake a National Phonic Screening Check.
